A memoir refers to a narrative detailing personal experience of a person. An individual can write about an aspect of life, certain event, specific period or the effect of a certain external event on his or her life. There are many professionals who offer guidance on how to write a memoir. Most of these professionals suggest that it is more advantageous to divide the entire task into several smaller stages and deal with each one of them at a time. It is a demanding process that requires commitment. The writing process can be very therapeutic as one recollects about previous experiences in life.

There is a very big difference between a memoir and an autobiography. An autobiography covers the entire life span of the writer and focuses mainly on the development of personality. The main focus was on the careers of writers rather than their private lives. Modern memoirs are presented from the point of view of the first person. Almost anyone can write a story to share a certain experience in their life.

A publishable memoir is a selective and crafted rendering of specific personal recollections. The events must be ordered logically in structured pose. There are many people who have had similar experiences. Therefore, the account has to be presented in manner that attracts readers. Memoirs are based on actual events but fiction helps to catch the attention of the reader and elicit emotional response.

Writing a this story is a daunting task. Proper planning increases the motivation of an individual since it creates a rough picture of the desired outcome. There are many reasons why people write memoirs including sharing wisdom, leaving a legacy for future generations or for therapeutic reasons. It is important to understand the specific reason and purpose for the project.

It is important to determine the specific time period to write about. This can be achieved by using a timeline to bookend the beginning as well as the end of the story. The timelines can encompass childhood years, an overseas adventure, time spent with loved ones, spiritual journey or the time spent in pursuant of a certain goal. Once the time period has been selected, a timeline indicating the major events can now be drawn.
